Very thought provoking article by Ebi Bozimo in Daily Times Nigeria. So happy to share.
Naija’s App-athetic BBstocracy
By Ebi Bozimo
Naija’s BBstocracy is populated by the young at heart who sling the most contemporary telecommunication gadgets about on hips and in backpacks. We revel in enjoyment, employment and entrepreneurial exploits. We belong to the instant-on, always-connected, immediate-gratification, status-updated generation. Android is a friend. We live by new-age maxims like “I tweet therefore I am” and contemp-aphorisms like: “Messages forwarded to my circle of friends represent the thoughts & opinions of every Nigerian, young or old”, or “I am young ergo I possess all the wisdom I need”, or even “I read it on Facebook; it MUST be true. I assume NO responsibility for independent thought or verification”.
We are the slice of Nigeria who can boast, by birth or berthing, of dual citizenship – our country and the blogosphere. We are hip to ‘celebrity’ happenings and blank to those we deign unworthy. We know more about goings-on in Japan than in Jalingo. We are educated, engaged, expressive and elitist and deliver our opinions via gestures in traffic, speeches, songs, sms, mms, email, bbm, facebook, twitter and blogs.
We take ourselves and our opinions seriously. So seriously that we sometimes overestimate our own importance and forget that we are no more concerned or opinionated than those in generations past; we merely have more outlets by which to communicate.
